About

The Beta Pi Chapter

The Beta Pi chapter of Delta Lambda Phi has been officially a part of Cal Poly’s campus since our chartering in February 2009. Our fraternity has dedicated itself to making our presence make a difference in the community and world we live in. Being the only gay, bisexual, and progressive fraternity at Cal Poly, we are certainly a brotherhood like no other!

We strive to be that beacon of light for any male individual who is looking to find friends and more importantly, brothers, with similar interests, ideals, and values. To that end, as a member of the Interfraternity Council at Cal Poly, we have made the following pledge with our fellow brothers in greek:

“We, the Interfraternity Council, are dedicated to building a sustainable Brothergood that fosters safety, and a respect for tradition. While holding each other accountable, we will act as a resource for fraternity men by providing guidance, encouragement, leadership development, and opportunities for personal and collective growth.”

If you want to see what it’s like being in Beta Pi, you can see what our brothers have to say about the topic in the video below.

National History

In Washington, DC, in October 1986, three elderly gentlemen established a trust to create a social fraternity that wouldn’t discriminate based on sexual orientation; the donors regretted such an alternative organization did not exist during their formative years. As Trustee, Vernon L. Strickland, III, administered the founding of Delta Lambda Phi National Social Fraternity, creating its crest, selecting its mascot and designing its rituals. In April 1987, Strickland initiated 24 men into the Fraternity’s Alpha Chapter — Delta Lambda Phi was born.

Since then, Delta Lambda Phi, a fraternity for gay, bisexual, and progressive men, has become one of the country’s fastest growing fraternities with chapters from coast to coast.

Founding Purposes

  • To provide dignified and purposeful, social, service, and recreational activities for progressive men, irrespective of sexual orientation.
  • To lead in determining the rights and privileges of individuals in society.
  • To promote a strong and positive image, which respects the diversity of all individuals, irrespective of sexual orientation.

These broad purposes make Delta Lambda Phi unique among organizations geared toward gay men. Other social options within the queer community may be superficial or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, overtly political. Delta Lambda Phi, however, emphasizes the creation of strong, long-lasting friendships between its members, as well as between the fraternity and the community-at-large. It is the unique experiences of a Greek organization that often make such friendships possible.
